Mastoid surgery, also called mastoidectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove diseased mastoid air cells. The mastoid is the part of your skull that sits behind your ear. It is filled with bone air cells and looks like a honeycomb. Diseased cells are often the result of an ear infection that has spread to the skull. The procedure can also be used to remove an abnormal growth in the ear known as a cholesteatoma.
